ROKiT Cities and Wayfree Wi-Fi deployment is supporting the Government of Guatemala’s ConectaGuate initiative aimed at bridging the digital divide in all 340 Municipalities across the country.

Los Angeles and Guatemala City 24 June 2021

ROKiT Cities has formed a private partnership with Wayfree, a Guatemalan Smart City company, to deploy freemium public Internet access via Wi-Fi across Guatemala. The current coverage reaches 20% of the 340 Municipalities in Guatemala, connecting almost a million people. With ROKiT Cities’ proprietary technologies it will be possible to achieve complete and affordable access to connectivity for the entire population in the 340 Municipalities of Guatemala by 2022/2023. The ConectaGuate initiative is a program launched by the Guatemalan Ministry of Communications (CIV) and led by the Vice Minister of Communications, Rodolfo Letona, with the mission of bridging the digital divide in Guatemala.

The initiative was announced at a press conference held at the National Palace of Culture in Guatemala City on Monday 21st June.

Jonathan Kendrick, Co-Founder and Chairman of the ROKiT Group of Companies said: “We are delighted to have teamed up with Wayfree and the Government of Guatemala to provide our technology and infrastructure to deliver a nationwide web of Internet access via Wi-Fi across the country. Connectivity is key to enabling the socio-economic progress of people and, in delivering our Wi-Fi services under a freemium model to the people of Guatemala. We are deploying a service which sits well with my philosophy, as well as that of my partner John Paul DeJoria, of doing good through compassionate capitalism, as we bridge the digital divide in the country.”

At the announcement of this initiative on the 21st Josue Lemus, the Minister of Communications (CIV) said: “The plan is a significant contribution to strengthen the education of the Guatemalan population.

The mission of the partnership between ROKiT & Wayfree is to connect the unconnected. We are confident that through connectivity, we can reduce the digital divide and improve people’s quality of life by creating opportunities that will reactivate the economy and will deter migration in the region.

Sergio X. Plaza, Founder and CEO of Wayfree added: “We are aware that Internet access is a human right legally recognized by the United Nations. Its facilitation is not only the responsibility of governments but is also a fundamental part of corporate social responsibility.

Our partnership with ROKiT and the utility companies; Empresa Eléctrica de Guatemala by Grupo EPM, ENERGUATE as well as with the ConectaGuate program will prove to be of enormous benefit to the people of Guatemala and we are very pleased to have announced these plans.

Thanks must go, in particular, to Dr. Alejandro Giammattei, the President of Guatemala, the Minister of Communications, Josue Lemus and the Vice-Minister of Communications, Rodolfo Letona.”
